Swimming 1,000 x 25m lengths of a public pool (25km)
I’ve really enjoyed swimming and improved considerably well over the last two years but I can only do breaststroke because of fitness reasons. After a bit of calculating to see what was possible (or almost impossible) I decided to set myself a challenge of swimming 1,000 x 25m pool lengths.
This should take me between 10-12 hours to complete due to the slower speed of the stroke and taking regular energy supplement breaks (and wee breaks). I calculated that I’ll be burning off between 8,000 to 10,000 calories if I complete this challenge, which is the same as what someone completing the Ironman challenge would burn off.
This is the challenge I’m most worried about due to exhaustion and back/muscle aches. I completed 200 at the beginning of 2014 which made me feel sick with exhaustion and my back was out for a couple of days.
I’ll be doing a run up of training/test sessions of 200 to 700 lengths. I’m currently speaking to a leading sports nutritionist Tom Irving who’s giving me guidance on what energy supplements I’ll need to keep taking during the run up and on the day of the challenge to keep me going. Still very, very worried about this one. If I get this done there’s nothing that will stop me completing the other four challenges.
The money raised with be added to the money raised for Challenge Two (14th June) – Great North Swim 2014 and will be split between two charities, Kidz2gether and Daytrippers Bolton. These are two fantastic charities which support children and families in a variety of important and fantastic ways. They have both been instrumental in supporting my own family members and those I work with in my various voluntary roles.
Daytrippers Bolton is a parent and carer led registered charity that provides days out and activities for disabled children and their families.
Kidz2gether support and introduce children and young people between the ages of 5 and 16, within mainstream education who have social and/or communication difficulties (autistic spectrum disorders) into inclusive social settings. They do this by planning and managing specially created groups & clubs and support the families of these children and young people.
Please please please give a little of what you can to these fantastic charities. This challenge is going to absolutely kill me and any donations no matter how small or large will be very well received by each charity and also a MASSIVE encouragement to spur me on.
I’m also spending a lot of my own cash to pay for the premium high grade energy supplements to keep me going through the day and for training as well as pool entrance fees for when I do my training and better swimming equipment (goggles, hat etc) just so I can set myself up for the challenge as best as I can.
Every penny raised will go to these two charities, none of my personal funds will be reimbursed.
